Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, understood the Scottish psyche pretty well. He was, of course, a traveller and, finally, an émigré. So he put his finger on the button when he wrote: "For that is the mark of the Scots of all classes: that he stands in an attitude towards the past unthinkable to Englishmen, and remembers and cherishes the memory of his forebears, good or bad. And there burns alive in him a sense of identity with the dead even to the twentieth generation."

It is estimated that there are at least 40 million people world-wide who claim Scottish descent - a lot more than the five million people who actually live in Scotland today. And as Stevenson's words so aptly sum up, Scots have a marked tendency to uphold and cherish their roots.
